Initially our work was to do a zoning check, report on the neighbourhood and
an overview of the building's physical conditions. Like many cities, Nanaimo had
seen its core deteriorate and the casino was seen as a way to get people and
life into the downtown again.
We did several design schemes based on how much of the existing commercial
plaza could be taken over by the casino from existing tenants. Sophisticated
computer models were used to convey the intended design.

In the end the casino occupies approximately 28,000 sq.ft. (2,600 m2) on
three levels. The main level contains the Gaming Floor, restaurant, washrooms,
public support spaces and the Back-of-House. The Lower Level contains storage
and work rooms as well as the back-up electrical generator. The Upper Level
contains the employee spaces.

The exterior design creates a new, progressive image for this casino and the
company as a whole. The use of glass and metal is a little futuristic and
upgrades the entire plaza.

The interior materials are themed around black ceilings with hot neon lights,
brass and red accents at the Cashier and Restaurant, black slot machines and
carpet patterns which indicate main circulation aisles. The washrooms are all
black marble and chrome; including our washroom graphics below. |
